Opus One, an iconic winery located in Napa Valley, California, is the result of a remarkable collaboration between two esteemed figures in the world of wine: Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Established in 1979, Opus One aimed to create a Bordeaux-style wine in the heart of California, blending the expertise of the Rothschild family from Bordeaux and Mondavi’s innovation in Napa. The inaugural vintage was released in 1980, marking a significant moment in the history of American winemaking. Opus One has consistently produced exceptional, limited-production wines that embody elegance, complexity, and the art of terroir, making it a benchmark for premium wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Opus One: Opus One

The winter of 2017 ended a five-year drought with January recording the most rainfall in over 20 years. The abundant rainfall continued into March, causing a modest delay in budbreak, and pushing bloom back by two weeks. Increased soil moisture allowed for healthy vine growth and development. The summer, in turn, was warm and punctuated by occasional heat waves. Despite Mother Nature’s variability, favorable weather in August provided optimal conditions for fruit development and maturation. Superb flavors and excellent ripening led to an earlier than expected harvest, which commenced on the 5th of September. Opus One 2017 offers a harmonious aromatic balance of rich dark fruit, stems of roses, and earthy forest floor. The juicy entry offers a round, silky mouthfeel with just enough acidity to complement the satin texture. This seductive wine shows flavors of black cassis, black cherry, and a hint of cocoa powder. The fine-grained, plush tannins evolve into a long, supple finish. A supremely age-worthy wine, that will delight you now and for many years to come.

Opus One: Overture

Overture displays a vibrant garnet color with expressive aromas of fresh red fruit. Notes of bright cherry and red currant are underpinned by more earthy tones of ground cocoa, cedar, and vanilla. Extended barrel aging gives the wine an elegant texture accentuated by round tannins and a soft mouthfeel.
